And all the work has been done for you!
I talked before about how and why we started living a "Paleo lifestyle" not long ago and thought I'd pass on this little tidbit.
Paleocon is a huge series of interviews with individuals at the top of their fields (nutrition, holistic healing, whole foods, raw diet, cooking, athletic training, clean eating with kids, women's health, general health, natural beauty, and more!) that you can play on your computer. Oh, did I mentioned they're all FREE?!
I have listened to several of these type summits over the past year or two and find the information so beneficial. Not only do these types of series offer you loads of great research but they also point you in the direction of where to learn more and make your own decisions on what's best for your family.
I just figured I'd pass it on.
Since it's free, what is there to lose?
Check it out at Paleocon.com

Bath Time Improv
For the past 8 months, the only way Baby J has bathed has been in the shower with me.
Our oldest two kids were afraid of water on their heads and faces for a long time so when Bean came around I started taking showers with her to get her used to the water on her face.
This has worked well for us.
Bath time is super fast, we can be assured the that they are getting really clean, and they've been used to water on their heads.
Clearly that was "baby brain" talking or maybe it was my intense desire to purge all the "extra" in our lives.
So rather than going out to buy another baby bath and bringing "stuff" back in the house, we improvised.
It was fantastic! It just so happens that the basket we had handy was small enough to keep him confined without being able to get onto his belly and it was the perfect depth that he could play in the water and stay warm.
Of course, this isn't my genius at work because, as it seems, Pinterest has stolen my ability to think for myself, but none the less, good ideas are good ideas em'i'right?

America's Cheapest Family
Without giving too much boring detail, I'll just tell you that Hubs and I have been looking for ways to pinch our pennies these days...
With a small student loan, two more years of a car loan, sub par savings account, a rapidly growing family, and hopes for making upgrades in our new house we have decided to prioritize for real.
Don't get me wrong, we have been trying to slim the budget for a while now but every day life manages to sneak in surprise expenses like the one just last week to fix the setting on my engagement ring because the prongs weren't looking so hot and I was afraid of losing a diamond. Cha-Ching!
So anyway... several of my searches for a better budget led me to the same place...

I've included the link above but I just headed down to the local library. (The Economides would have been proud!)
This baby is full of ideas, some brilliant, others wise, and a few seemed downright crazy but in the long run doing some silly things (like bringing a crockpot on vacation to heat dinner in the bathroom during the day) doesn't seem so bad when you think about how much money you're saving per meal and renovations that brand new kitchen at home you worked so hard to pay for.
Just thought I'd share.
Happy Monday!

Homemade Nutter Butter Cookies
I made these the other day. You should too.
Find the recipe at Cookies and Cups and be prepared for tastiness!
No skimping on sugar here but worth it for a special treat.
They definitely spread so stick with the 1" ball otherwise you're going to end up with ginormous cookies. (Yes, there are worse things that can happen than huge, yummy cookies.)

Grab'n Go Breakfasts
And better yet, they're make ahead breakfasts you can feel good about!
I had Miss Mak help me with these this morning and since most of the measurements are large it was fairly easy. The fun part was using a potato masher to cream the bananas. Of course her favorite part was taste testing.
First up...
1 1/2 cups quick cooking oats
1/4 cup packed light brown sugar {I used rapadura)
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup milk
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1 large mashed banana
1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
What To Do:
Mix together the quick cooking oats, sugar, baking powder, kosher salt and ground cinnamon.
Add in the vanilla extract, milk and egg. Mix the ingredients together.
Then add in the mashed banana and peanut butter. Combine all of the ingredients.
Pour the mixture into a lightly greased 8 by 8 inch metal baking pan. Bake at 350 F degrees for 20 minutes.
Cut into squares and enjoy!
and since I already had half of the same ingredients out, I went ahead and made a batch of

Favorite Last Minute Marinade
I first found this recipe on SkinnyTaste.com as a grilled chicken salad.
Well Hubs and I fell in love with the recipe for the chicken. I love it because it's so stinkin' easy. He loves it because I serve it to him.
I'll get right to the good part...
What You'll Need:
2 T fresh squeezed lemon juice (bottled is acceptable but I ALWAYS prefer fresh)
1 t dried oregano
1 t crushed garlic (fresh is always best, again, but I've used dried in a pinch)
salt to taste
black pepper to taste
What To Do:
I usually slice3-4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves and throw them in a bowl with all of the above ingredients and let it for about 30 minutes. We then throw the chicken into a grill pan on the grill and cook it through then let it rest for 10 minutes under some foil.
I usually double or triple this recipe and keep the cooled chicken in the fridge for fast lunches. This stuff is wonderful on a sandwiches, wraps, salads, or as a main dish. I often give the kids the chicken as their meal and Hubs and I have a salad with sunflower seeds, sprouts, and dried cranberries. I often use my favorite poppy seed salad dressing but it works great with just a squeeze of lemon and some olive oil too. It's all good!
**Marinating Tip:
If you have a Food Saver and are REALLY crunched for time, throw all the ingredients (including the chicken) in a canister and seal. Depending on the depth of flavor you want you can leave it sealed for about 5 minutes and be good to do.

Life Binder Part 1
I'm just going to start by saying, "Paige drug me into this!"
Now that that's out of the way...
If you don't know what a life binder is I'll tell you that it is, in fact, a "Project of Epic Proportions" like my dear friend Laura {or Paige as I call her} warns it will be on her blog Our Portion.
Intro: What is a Home Management Binder?
Supplies
Contacts
Medical
Account Information
Budget & Bills
Paige offers a bunch of information on how she's building her folder as well as resources she found for free printables! What's not to love?!
I'll get to how my folder turned out once I am done because I can tell that I'm already going to be adding and making changes to what I've done. What I will say is that we have our fourth child on the way and getting organized isn't just for kicks anymore... IT'S A NECESSITY and though I have only just begun things have definitely been simplified around here. Be warned: It's a LOT of work on the front end but using it in the day-to-day has made an impact.
For the record, Paige and I are not the first to create these binders. The web is loaded with printables {free and for sale}and ideas to get the ball rolling and get you thinking about what will work for you.
Mandi from Finding Home shares her life binder with bunches of free printables
She's got great ideas ranging from meal planning to keeping track of birthdays to remembering movies you want to see!
A Bowl Full of Lemons has several great ideas and gives a rough overview of what she included plus a plethora of links to free and for sale printables.
Tiffany from The Nest Effect has made her own printables that are for sale or, at the very least, are good ideas to get you thinking.
Jen from IHeart Organizing also offers some really cute printables for her household binder along with smart ideas for how to keep yourself organized.

"The Only Spot Remover You'll Ever Need"
Originally from glamour.com, I found this recipe on One Good Thing by Jillee and it has turned me, an I'm-too-lazy-to-try-so--I'll-just-make-the-ruined-shirt-into-pajamas girl into a why-not-remove-the-stain-since-it's-so-easy girl instead.
I'll get right to the goods...
The best way, I've found, is to use a liquid measuring cup with a spout, measure out the ingredients (for my bottle size that means 1 c peroxide, 1/2 c Dawn), stir with a fork, pour into container. Fini!
When it's time to apply, I recommend using a scrub brush to work it in...
This was way too easy for me not to try and so far I've removed axle grease from Hub's dress shirt, oil stains from Miss Mak's pants, drool stains from Bean's collar, who-knows-what-he's-been-into stains from CJ's play clothes, and I even used it as the spray solution on my carpet when my brother walked through my house with grease laden boots.
I did try it out on a cloth napkin I have used for 6 years for my bread basket which has been drenched in butter and oil. After several washes the oil stains were definitely gone but the yellow coloring was still visible which makes me wonder more about what was in the butter I used to use than the cleaner's power.
Needless to say, I'm a believer!

1 spray bottle

Another Project Done!
Hi!
Yesterday I shared this picture on Facebook...
I've made a bit of progress...
drumroll, please.......
ta da!
It's the perfect table for our covered porch and I am so excited to have it!
I finished it yesterday afternoon and we've already used it three times!
Now, mind you, I still have some work to do to finish it...
As you can see...
the table sits a bit high!
The first step to finishing it is to cut down the legs so the kids can actually use it.
I AM THRILLED!
OH! And a side note about the one beautiful hanging basket and the onepathetically sad dead one...
We have a guest!

I still need to fill, sand, stain, and seal the top and then paint the legs but for a days worth of workI AM THRILLED!
More info coming soon on how I did it. In case you were wondering.

Individual Fruit Pizza
We had a baby shower for a beautiful friend this weekend who may very well be the cutest pregnant woman I've ever seen!
I was asked to make something to eat at the shower and of course I jumped at the chance to try out some new recipes I've found on Pinterest!
So here's how it goes...
I was asked to make something to eat at the shower and of course I jumped at the chance to try out some new recipes I've found on Pinterest!
There has been a really fun fruit salad idea going around from The Entertaining Elf that's perfect for baby showers but it's a bit popular and I like off-beat so I opted for the fruit pizza idea I found at Joy Is At Home which I spun off of and used the Amazing Fruit Salsa recipe I love so much.
So here's how it goes...
What You'll Need:
sugar cookies {baked and cooled}
1 container cool whip
8 oz cream cheese
1 batch of fruit salsa
What To Do:
Mix cool whip and cream cheese together with a fork or hand mixer. {If you taste this mixture you'll notice that it's light on flavor but I promise you, that's just how you want it.}
Get your cookies handy...{I opted to save my time and use the Pillsbury cut and bake.
They hold up well if the salsa gets juicy. I don't recommend using a soft sugar cookie recipe with this.}
and then...
and...
Finally, you send me a "thank you" card for finding and sharing this yummy-ness!
Happy Day To You!!

PB&J Smoothie
We have taken a break from out standard tropical fruit, spinach, kefir, and yogurt smoothie because I made this once and the kids love it!
Yes, they actually ASK for it!
I found the idea at 100 Days of Real Food. Great site!
I vary from the original a bit but the basics are the same and I want to give credit to the originator of the idea...
My Version: 1/3 c yogurt, 1/3 c kefir or milk, 1/3 c peanut butter, 1 banana, 1 c frozen blueberries
Blend together and serve.

That Bathtime Glow!
Once again, Pinterest has served us well.
I found this post at Play At Home Mom and thought it looked like all kinds of crazy fun.
It just so happens that Target has had loads of these in their dollar section around here so I snagged up a few and gave it a shot when CJ had his friend, D, over last week.
Conclusion: super cheap super fun! The boys took a 45 minute bath. The water was cold by the time they finally gave up.
{My one recommendation... if you have a kiddo who can't seem to keep things out of their mouths, stay with them or have a serious talk about how that's not an acceptable way of playing with them. Just a thought.}

Painted
Every so often the kiddos get antsy and I decide that it's time for them to get creative instead.
Out come the finger paints and water colors, crayons and paper.
Dangerous? Maybe.
Worthwhile? You bet!
Normally I hand the kids the supplies and clean the house, fold laundry, rest on the couch, etc...
It struck me recently that if I value creativity so much, why am I not taking the time to create with my kids... so this time I sat down with them.
I was lacking inspiration beyond the usual train, truck, cow, loader, that CJ asks me to draw for him.
Instead, I turned to my greatest source of current inspiration... Pinterest.
I've saved plenty of signs that I'd like to see placed around the house ... I particularly love this one that I first saw at Whatever...
Some of the sayings I found are easy to duplicate using Picnik but I found that some were rather simple to do while playing with my kids using their craft supplies...
These are certainly not exact duplicates but I figure that slapping frame around these craft paper, permenant marker, water color images will do the trick for us.
So rather than saving up for pricey pictures, give DIY a shot.
Frame it
and hang it proudly.
Seriously, who's gonna know?
